John Matthews' new book is a good introduction for those who haven't read Karl Bell's scholarly anthology "The Legend of Spring Heeled Jack" (which I strongly recommend) while we all wait for Mike Dash's much-anticipated and much-delayed work on this subject. More than 80 recipes are included in the menus for 11 Texas-themed parties, such as a vintage bridal brunch, a Sunday church potluck, a Fourth of July fish fry, a wild game gathering, and a cattleman's cocktail party. I have two complaints in that I felt some story lines were rushed and others were prolonged. If you have read "The 39 Steps" this is a fitting companion book.
